Hoping to get some nice 2nd cut Lucerne Hay produced this new week before it gets too hot on Wednesday.
I actually seen in the video that a car came with a big white float to pick up hay while l was out delivering. I didn't know who it was as l didn't receive their order. This is why you must always seek order confirmation from me in Live Chat every time you order. Also on odd occasions, l forget to block the calendar for the rest of the day as l am out in another paddock away from the farm, so it's not viable for me to drive all the way back to the main farm to put out an order, making hay is of the essence. So rarely, orders are rescheduled after discussion with individual client.
l am off now to Inverleigh to pack straw for someone till all hours in the morning. Been out and attended to three deliveries today as well as raking Lucerne Hay. Just crazy busy times at the moment. Take care and will chat again soon.

There has been numerous pages who have been using Matthey Farm name and address to sell fake hay and wood, it is identity theft!!
This is not me and l have NOT consented them to use me as a reference/ or as a third party to sell any hay!
I honestly don't know of any farmer using a third party to sell their hay, farmers usually sell their hay directly to customers, to other farmers and to stockfeed places.
Things to avoid being scammed is;
Always pay cash only for any new supplier, no exceptions. All Aussie farmers will accept cash payment.
Do research about the farmer/ page, consult with friends. If there are a lot of comments and the page just pm people, this is a warning sign. Go through the page thoroughly, see if there are reviews, comments. Don't be fooled by the number of likes/ followers as they have thousands of fake profiles to like these scam pages. They are getting smart in what to say in a post, not saying the wrong hay (that doesn't grow in Oz) and their metric system is different to ours. If the page doesn't have an address or even a suburb listed (Matthey Farm has Melbourne on FB page). Most posts will not advertise the location, price and description of the hay. Is the page listed as agricultural or farm? Also another giveaway is the price of the hay. If it's too cheap, it's too good to be true.
Do a search on the name of the page. You may find numerous ones the exact same, just sitting their ready to be used when their main scam page has been blocked from FB.
Let the business/ farmer know if a third party is trying to sell hay on their behalf, have that conversation. They may not be aware of the scam page using their name and address.
Take screenshots of the page/ Conversations, then report the page and if you like, add angry faces to all their posts before they block you. I added the angry faces, but when l started to comment in their posts, l was blocked.
Let as many people as you can be aware about the name of the scam page.
Always trust your instinct.
If you see or get scammed, do screenshots, report to;
- Facebook and hopefully they will remove it sooner than later.
- ScamWatch https://www.scamwatch.gov.au/report-a-scam
- Consumer Affairs VIC https://www.consumer.vic.gov.au/.../report.../report-a-scam
- Send a message to the genuine business, they may be unaware
And if you lose money

- Your Bank
What has Matthey Farm done about the scammers, people are contacting this farm almost daily now to confirm its a scam page.
1. Matthey Farm is no longer active on Facebook since November 2024. The page is still active to use as a reference for those doing research 2. Matthey Farm is via website only for all correspondence and orders 3. Matthey Farm has deleted Google Maps/ Maps to avoid scammers using both name and address to sell fake hay & wood. Also making sure that you cannot search for Matthey Farm details on the web 4. Occasionally putting posts up on Facebook about scammers, how to recognise them and what to do about them and if you have been scammed. 5. Have been in contact with Consumers Affairs VIC, Small Business Commission VIC, ScamWatch and Legal Aid to help protect Matthey Farm business and those being scammed.
Matthey Farm has done everything in their power to help those out in our community. Matthey Farm does not wish to have a bad reputation because of these scammers.
Please do your part by sharing this information, thank you.
What page names have been used for scamming?
How many of each can you count? Only a few are currently being used, all the rest of them are just waiting to be used when their main page gets blocked on Facebook. It's a never ending cycle!
Please be mindful of the genuine ones.
Maybe Facebook is not the place to buy hay any more?
But scammers are everywhere, so find yourself a safe group to buy your hay?

⛔ Matthey Farm is closed Wednesday 4pm on 24th December 2025 & reopens Friday 7am on 2nd January 2026. 🛑
Please be mindful that the website will not be open during my mental health time out and so l have the opportunity to catch up with family & friends. There will be no products or bookings available and l will not be available for all chats during this time. See FAQ for any answers you seek.
What a start to the hay season, very slow and not very productive because of the weather.
All the 1st cut Lucerne Hay has been mowed - l still have two paddocks of lucerne hay to cure, bale and get into the shed. With rain predicted today (under 1mm) will slow the process down.
Currently l have 250 Yummy Lucerne which limits may apply and 1,900 Tasty Lucerne (has Milk Thistles & Wimmera Rye) which is available to both Regular Horse & Stockfeed Customers.
Also there is plenty of silage fermenting (minimum 6 weeks);
29 x Lucerne & Grass Silage ready 14/12/25
12 x Lucerne & Grass Silage ready 02/01/26
30 x Lucerne & Weeds Silage ready 02/01/26
62 x Lucerne Silage ready 09/01/26
6 x Lucerne Silage is ready now.
At least l haven't need to water the 2nd cut Lucerne Hay which is growing nicely.
All the Oaten Hay has been mowed and in one paddock, Steve has conditioned it again (all hay is conditioned when mowed). Trying to see if this helps and shaves off at least a day of the curing process. Unsure if it will work due to under 1mm of rain predicted for today's weather.
And all the Grass Hay has been mowed, but there is a paddock that has been lost completely. It had received over 20mm of rain, then we got the heat and humidity which just ruined it all.
l currently have 100 Horse Quality bales that is advertised remaining. Will see if l can make more from the other paddocks, always weather permitting.
Farmer Geoff is not having much luck either with his grass hay. l will keep you posted as l believe there wont be much Horse Quality for him to sell this season.
During these long hours for me being in the tractor, it is better for you to always give me a days notice for your order for a few reasons.
1. is that l am not always at the main farm to put out your hay
2. gives you the opportunity to always seek your order confirmation from me
3. you have enough time to get your cash ready to pay on pick up
Cash can be obtained around Bannockburn at the complex where the supermarket is, there is an atm inside the building.
You can get cash out up to $200 at the Safeway supermarket if they have it.
Try the Post Office.
There is an atm inside the Ampol Service Station at the cnr of the Midland Highway & Geelong Road (Bannockburn roundabout)
Bendigo Bank atm is permanently closed.
Let's hope that l can cure all the hay that has been mowed recently and get it baled and in the very empty shed. This is the fifth difficult season in a row to be making hay.
Also be mindful of those farmers who have had shed fires because they don't cure the hay properly and baled the hay with too much moisture.
l do take pride every time l process hay, l use the manual method of knowing moisture content as l was taught by the best, Farmer Geoff. Thanks mate.
13/12/25 - just quickly, l am open to new customers till 23rd Dec only to place an order.
l now have HAY for a variety of furbabies;
Tasty Lucerne Hay for everyone (suitable for all animals)
Scrumptious Oaten Hay for everyone (suitable for all animals)
Phalaris & Wimmera Rye Grass Hay for everyone (suitable for all animals)
Italian Rye Grass & Lucerne Hay for everyone (suitable for all animals)
Stockfeed Phalaris & Wimmera Rye Grass for everyone (not for horses)
Lucerne & Weeds Silage (not for horses)
Lucerne & Grass Silage (not for horses)
Lucerne Hay Silage (not for horses)
Yummy Lucerne Hay is only available to Regular Customers.
l will be sending out to most members a group email too today.
So l have been at it all day and night and still going, trying to get all this hay baled, packed and in the shed. l started to irrigate the Lucerne Hay on the 10th December as it's drying out fast here. Catch ya later, gotta keep going!
19/12/25 - Crazy manic busy, doing a minimum of 20 hour days for the last fortnight and still going! Almost at the finish line with this lot of seasonal hay, grass & oaten. Starting the 2nd cut lucerne hay already too.
New Customers, remember to chat to me in 'Live Chat" so l can assign you a badge (7am to 7pm) so you have access to the SHOP tab. You have until the Tuesday 23rd December 2025 to place an order.
Going to have a quick nap and back into it as it was another all nighter for me.
20/12/25 - Last post for the year!
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to you all and to your beautiful furbaies.
Thank you for being honest and loyal, its greatly appreciated.
l am excited because tonight after a couple of weeks working around 20 hour days, l can actually have a sleep tonight like a normal person lol.
l have finished fertilising the lucerne hay this morning before the expected 20mm to arrive in time to help make it all grow.
New Customers end on Tuesday 23rd Dec, so get your orders in now to become a regular customer for season 25/26.
Take care and will catch you in 2026, cheers, Gene
- 08
02/11/25 - Well. did sneak in some mowing over a week ago of Lucerne Hay, just a small patch again as there was more rain predicted for the next week (over 40mm?) So, l am hoping to shortly bale some into small squares, and the rest will be in Silage as there was some grass in one area of the lucerne, and it's still not cured properly because of the grass. Might get about 200 bales of small squares, so l will advertise once when they are in the shed and will have a limit per customer as we all need to share at this stage. Lets hope the customers who have been asking, may be able to purchase some this time round.
Next lot of lucerne could be late November, early December as we are not getting enough dry, sunny, breezy days for curing hay, need over a good week for the whole process.
Fingers Crossed 🤞🏻
10/11/25 - We did get 40mm of rain on Monday 3rd. Lucky l got 180 small squares of Tasty Lucerne Hay. The rest in silage (29) which will be available for sale on 14/12/25 as it has to sit for 6 weeks to ferment.
Today, l have mowed a small patch of Lucerne Hay (5 acres) as the Tasty Lucerne Hay has almost all sold (6 bales left). Unknown the outcome of this hay as we have rain predicted this afternoon, tomorrow, Friday, Saturday and next Monday. The problem with rain is that it can decrease the nutritional value of the hay and is very hard to cure. l had to make the decision to mow as there are heaps of customers in need of hay. So, it's a chance l had to take. Being a farmer certainly has its challenges. Just hope l can make some more horse quality hay. This is why it is limited hay at the moment because l am not making much and there is hungry furbabies.
l will let you know when you can buy bulk amounts hay (when the shed is at least over halfway full - it's very empty at the moment). So, at this stage, please only buy what you need so everyone has the opportunity to get some hay to get by for now, thank you.
Please take the time read the product titles and to and read their description. There is;
"4 easy steps to Order",
"Badges - why are they important",
"Communication is the key" and
"HAY FOR SALE".
This is displayed as l still have some regular customers not reading their reply's, haven't been seeking their order confirmation and still struggle to place an order correctly.
There is heaps of information in FAQ, just type in the key words in the search.
l have decided for the Regular Customers to be horse owners as the hay advertised in this section is for horses only.
Stockfeed customers are regulars who own stock (excluding horses) as the hay/ silage advertised is usually just for stock to consume, not horses.
Stay tuned here to see what happens with hay progress!
14/11/25 - So, the first two lots of Tasty Lucerne produced (360 bales) have been sold now. The third lot of 5 acres did get some rain on it but is curing nicely for now. The fourth lot of 20 acres of Lucerne had been mowed on Wednesday. Yesterday l conditioned (without the mower) again (the mower conditions it is when the hay is being mowed which helps with the curing process, speeds it up) a small lucerne patch to see if it would help cure the hay faster, will see what happens. Then l spent the rest of the day to 8pm raking Farmer Geoff's grass in a huge paddock which will be for Stockfeed only when it eventually gets baled.
Today l have been out raking all of the 25 acres of Lucerne Hay (3rd & 4th lot) so hoping to bale soon when it cures properly as there is more rain predicted early hours of Saturday, then a bit more Sunday and Monday.
It's such a challenge to try and get a break in our unpredictable weather to produce any hay. It's great to have Farmer Geoff to talk to as he is having the same trouble and finding it very hard to produce anything horse quality.
But the advantage of these weather conditions is that mowing, curing and baling the grass hay now for stockfeed, it's very likely to get a second cut with hoping in a couple of months will be ideal weather conditions for curing the grass hay properly in sunny conditions for horses.
Once when (fingers crossed) l get to bale this lucerne hay and its safe in the shed, l will advertise with limits again as there are still customers who haven't had the opportunity to buy any new season. Now to go and mow along the hill. This lot will all be Stockfeed as there is quite a few weeds in here.
Only buy what you need to get by for now please, we need to share, cheers.
16/11/25 - Semi exciting news, l got to bale 250 Yummy Lucerne Hay last night. That was all the lucerne that was ready to be baled. The catch is that they are still out in the paddock because of a few misty rains have come through this morning. Waiting for them to dry out before putting them in the shed and advertise them.
REGULAR HORSE CUSTOMERS were all sent a group email on 14/11/25
On the website, go to SHOP tab and select "Regular Customer" to see what's available, read the title and description prior to ordering,
If you have the Mobile App, make sure you download the icon. Just press this icon and everything is in here, you don't need the website, logging in, etc.
19/11/25 - Well, it's been very interesting weather for trying to make hay! Too much of misty rain the last few days but had to mow most of the 1st cut Lucerne Hay as it was ready. Now to try and cure it will be the next challenge. It could take a week or more. Just need some sun, breeze and no rain please weather gods. There are only small amounts of Yummy Lucerne & Grass hay currently available for Regular Horse Customers only and Silage for Stockfeed.
Limits apply to share with all customers,
Oaten Hay is looking good and might be mowing this soon.
Stay tuned, will have hay eventually!
23/11/25 - Busy Busy! It was a mad rush to get as much as l could cured and baled before the rains arrived last night. Ended up getting 6.5mm. So, we have Tasty & Yummy Lucerne Hay advertised. There are no limits as there is about 250 bales of each, but you only purchase what you need for now please as we are needing to share with all the Regular Horse Customers and Stockfeed people. Limits will apply if you decide to order too much at once, bulk buying is possibly in February when hopefully the shed is full of hay.
The weather is forecast to be as cool as it is in August, so it's still a long road ahead to produce horse quality hay.
Regular Horse Customers are RC's who have horses & can access mobile app.
Stockfeed Customers are regulars who have cattle, sheep, alpacas & goats to feed.
ANYONE can order is for those members who l have spoken to and have any badge to access. No visitors can access any subsections of the SHOP.
Mobile App has been updated in FAQ for those who still don't have the app icon on your mobile. This app is only for those who have the yellow mobile app badge and who have horses only.
If you have both horses & stock, then it would be suitable to use the website.
25/11/25 - We have rain arriving again tomorrow, on and off every third day it seems.
All the grass hay has been sold for now, more to produce when it cures properly.
Almost out of Tasty Lucerne Hay again, so get in fast and only order what you need to last you for a little while. Remember bulk buying hay is around Feb.
December is around the corner, so work out how much hay you do need as the farm always closes from 4pm Wednesday 24th December 2025 and reopens 7am Friday 2nd January 2026. You will not be able to order or get responses from Live Chat during this time as it's for my Mental Health and time to still play with hay and my family.
26/11/25 - Finally got to baled some more Yummy Lucerne Hay last night, pack and get them into the shed prior to the rains arriving this morning. Finished at 1am, so wasn't too long of a day/ night. l did 280 bales in total.
While the weather has deteriorated for the next week, l have plenty of paperwork to catch up on and general maintenance on all machinery so it's ready when the weather is to produce more hay.
It will be at least another week before l even consider mowing any Oaten Hay.
Remember that the weather predicts the outcome and the supply of hay as well as some other things, but mostly the weather. Need a good week and half of sunny, breezy and warmish days to make the Luscious Lucerne Hay.
Stockfeed - there is three variety of Silage for sale - two lots are currently fermenting. Not sure if l will be having any more bales as l really try to make all hay Horse Quality.
- 09
06/10/25 - Still waiting patiently for the start of this new season of hay, the weather is still all over the place and needing consistent warmer sunny days to produce any hay. The Lucerne Hay is still growing, so could be mid to late October or even early November at this stage. There's been lots of irrigating and fertilizing for the Lucerne and Oaten Hay. Not much rain during Spring, which is unusual. The dam is full, ready for the start of this new season,
The front main page of this website will inform everyone what hay is available to who, then get your updates in these monthly FAQ newsletters.
Please show the initiative and search your key words in FAQ to find the answer to any questions you may have. There is plenty of answers to be found within the three categories of General, All About Hay and Ordering Questions. Only chat in Live Chat if you cannot find the answer or needing confirmation for your order. l am busy all day every day still on the farms.
Visitors don't have access to the SHOP tabs (need to Sign Up and talk to me to get a badge assigned) and l cannot respond to them when a message is sent via Live Chat.
Sign Up is for new members only, no duplicate accounts please. Only Sign Up when you are ready to order and Matthey Farm is open to the public.
Log In is for existing members who have been assigned a badge (see your profile for badge/s). Regular Customers with the Mobile App badge, please use the Mobile App (see FAQ for instructions). It's much easier to use and to communicate with.
l reply to everyone's query promptly in Live Chat 7am to 7pm daily (except for Visitors as it won't allow me). l noticed that not everyone is looking for my response in their junk/ spam email folder. l am quite time poor already with heaps going on at the farm, just look for the answer in FAQ please.
19/10/25 - Well, we have officially started with the new season, but with a small number of bales, limits apply. Only 180 bales of Tasty Lucerne, horse quality but was rained on a little bit, it has been cured properly prior to baling. Also, there will be my Mixed Wimmera Rye & Phalaris grass 105 bales in smalls hoping to bale later today, get them in packs and into the shed before we get some showers tonight. There will be very limited amount available as it's a small paddock.
There is a fair bit of rain expected in this new week, so l won't be outside all that much, just catching up on heaps of manual paperwork to complete for a variety of family businesses.
So, it's looking like l am hoping to mow Lucerne Hay early November, weather permitting of course. Need a good week of no rain and some breeze (not all this fast-blowing winds) to cure the hay.
No news from Farmer Geoff about his grass hay. He most likely will be waiting till after we get all the rain, so could be November/ December. Will keep you posted when l know.
A group email was sent to Regular and Stockfeed Customers advised some hay for sale with limits per person, so everyone gets to have some.
Make sure that you do NOT unsubscribe to my emails. You will get emails for order confirmation, replied to responses from Live Chat and the odd email to let you know about products available.
20/10/25 - Sorry to those who are wanting hay. All the 180 bales of Tasty Lucerne Hay have been sold very quickly pending pick ups. In regard to the grass hay l baled yesterday, it's in the shed, but a little bit warm, so just waiting to make sure they cool down correctly and make sure they will still be suitable for horses. l was in a hurry to bale them as the rains was coming.
Please be mindful that the Delicious Lucerne has been allocated to certain Regular Customers and is not for every RC to purchase. You guys have been with me all season, you should know how to read, show initiative and seek replied responses from me when your offline in your emails.
I would like to give a BIG thank you to those who are always showing the initiative and looking up answers about the farm and hay or the monthly newsletters in FAQ, who always orders correctly every time and to those who always seek their order confirmation from me in Live Chat. To those who actually read the product title and description, acknowledging the limits. And those who are truly dedicated and loyal, to the Regular Customers who have downloaded the Matthey Farm mobile app. Lastly, to most customers who are very honest to always pay the total cash amount when picking up their hay. All these little things you do make my working environment less stressful and appreciative to know that all these long hours l put into the farm every single day is worth it, so thank you.
23/10/25 - Grass Hay for sale, but only 105 bales up for grabs with 10 bales per person limit. This is my grass (Wimmera Rye mixed with a bit of Phalaris grass small square bales) coming from a small section along the weir. l am hoping that with the odd shower of rain we do get in the meantime, that it will grow back so l can get a second cut. Last season l got over 200 bales, so will see what happens. This small section of grass is not irrigated, so it's in the weather gods.
When is more hay available you say? Well, since l don't buy hay in (except selling Farmers Geoff's small grass hay (could be Nov/Dec)) and produce all Lucerne, Oaten & Grass Hay at the Matthey Farm - it's unknown when at this stage. If you can tell me when there is a clear week minimum for the weather at the farm to be sunny, some breeze and no rain; is when l will start mowing. The weather has been up and down like a rollercoaster for the last month, no consistency yet.
So, l am guessing it could be easily mid to late November now.
When l do start, l will be extremely busy working very long hours.
Fingers crossed the Weather Gods are kinder on farmers this season, as the last four has been shocking.
29/10/25 - Who would want to be a farmer? Me, lol! The weather is still currently very inconsistent with a few sunny days, then more rain. We just got 27.5mm the other day.
Would love to have over a good week of sun, some breeze with no rain, to mow, rake, cure, bale, pack and store Lucerne Hay in the shed ready to be sold.
l did mow a little section of Lucerne Hay on Monday, but with the predicted rain on Friday, Sunday, Monday & Tuesday, it is not looking promising. Just not enough time to cure the hay properly. l do pride myself with high quality hay, let's hope the weather improves.
l would like to give you all apologies for WIX (the website connection) for changing the chat messages sent to you from Live Chat to your emails. They have now made you go back to the website to respond, which is out of my control sorry. l have tried to fix it up, but that's their "new feature" that cannot be altered.
So, it will be easier for you to just stay LOG IN the website as you can only reply to any chat messages in your log in account.
Regular Customers who have the app will find communication so much easier, it's like messenger.

* Communication is the key for both parties meeting your needs.
Most answers to your questions is below or in other FAQ Q&A.
Please do NOT Sign Up as a new member in the off season as this causes problems when you are actually ready to order. Often customers forget their method of logging in and their password. All new members are assigned a badge so they have access to order after discussion of who and what you are after when your membership becomes approved during trading hours of 7am to 7pm daily.
Visitors who send a message in Live Chat, please be mindful that l cannot respond to you when you are offline. Please seek your answer in FAQ, there are heaps of information available.
For Regular Customers, please download and have your Mobile App ready for the new season. Instructions is in another FAQ. Only those with a mobile app badge can use this app. You can see if you have this badge in "my profile.
06/08/25 - The farm has been closed since 8th June 2025 as all products (hay & wood) have been sold for this season - excluding bales which are reserved for the regular customers who have been in contact with me and are aware of their amount to collect.
There hasn't been a lot to report during the off season, been super busy catching up on manual paperwork (no computers used for accounts, just books, paper and pen). Catching up with all the paperwork for other family businesses and maintenance on properties.
There hasn't been much rain to bother mentioning, just a little bit here and there.
l did re-sow the Lucerne Hay patch along the hill as your coming around the road and it copped 70mm of rain in June which washed a lot of the seeds away instead of propagating it. So, what to do with this patch for the new season? Might sow some grass in there to have a mix and so it's not wasted. There has been other areas that have been sowed with Lucerne, Oaten and Grass Hay for the new season on the different farms. l have sprayed the weeds out of all the crops a few times already as it appears to be like Spring weather already. Not sure what we should be doing with the ducks though, my goodness they are making a mess in the lucerne patches right beside the dam. They are mowing it like sheep.
l have been catching up on machinery maintenance and upgrading parts so it's all ready. Also, maintenance on both the electric and diesel pump as very slowly has the water come down the river, so not a lot of opportunities to add water into the dam.
There is always so much to do on the farm in the off season, so my days are around 8 hours a day instead of 12 plus.
l've actually have some time to catch up with family as l miss them a good six months of the year when producing hay. l don't think l will get to have a holiday (it's been years since my last escape) as l am patiently waiting for the remaining lucerne hay bales to be picked up.
So the new Lucerne Hay season will start Oct/Nov (always weather permitting) and the Oaten & Grass Hay Dec/ Jan (weather permitting).
l will be having a Regular Customer system again in the new season, but l will not be reserving any bales for anyone. Please make sure that you get your main supply in February/ March 2026 to last you till Oct/ Nov 2026 before the numbers start to decline. As a customer, it is your responsibility to ensure you have enough feed for your animals.
It is looking like another dry year, so be prepared early.
10/09/25 - We haven't had much rain at all in the last few months, very dry on the farm and today l have started to fertilise and irrigate some lucerne sections to get it grow ready for next month, which l am hoping to start the season but it's always dependant on the weather conditions.
l will let you know when l start the new Lucerne Hay season in October Newsletter, so keep an eye out in FAQ for monthly updates and what hay/ straw will be available. You can also see the updated product list in "Anyone can order" (just scroll down to the products).
The Lucerne Hay patch along the road, the worse part l just sowed in some Oaten Hay and left the rest to grow. Hopefully we get to produce some hay form here a few times over the new season.
The ducks & coots have been a menace eating lots of areas of lucerne around the dam. Recently l had purchased these coloured windmill decorations thingos to deter them from areas and you wouldn't believe it, it actually works. l only have four, so spreading them in each section and moving them at least every second day. l am considering buying more to save the lucerne, especially the newer lucerne crops. The damage they have made already into the new season is very bad. 🔅these windmills go around in circles with the breeze and are bright, so the light/ sun reflects off them, great inventions so far.
27/09/25 - Today we celebrate Muffin's 30th birthday. He is the "paddock ornament" we have here at the Matthey Farm. Muffin was an ex-racehorse (named Niplag) and was an A grade polo cross horse, then had the life living on the farm, rounding up the sheep or just going flat chat along the old market garden paddocks for the past 15 years. He is a hoot, has some sass about him and is kid proof. Just a beautiful natured old fella who loves to give cuddles. Muffin is in the picture with Kira (his girlfriend) in FAQ on the home page on this website, eating lucerne hay together.
Here is a picture of Mr Muffin and yes he is wearing a party hat! 🥳
Thank you, Farmer Gene

There is NO HAY FOR SALE at the Matthey Farm till next season Oct/ Nov.
Please do not Sign Up to join as a member, until there is something to purchase next season. All firewood has been sold also.
Other than Regular Customers (those who have purchased horse quality small squares this season starting 8th November 2024) for this month only, June. l am consulting with Regular Customers when they order, to ensure they have enough to last till new season - all Regular Customers have now been allocated their limit via Live Chat (check your spam email if offline) from today, 8th June 2025.
Ideally, bulk buying hay should be done in the month of February.
Please check your spam emails for correspondence when offline.
✳ Regular Customers will be asked to move to the Matthey Farm mobile app for next season which is easier to order and to communicate.
So Matthey Farm will be Closed from 8th June 2025 to when the new lucerne hay season starts. Always weather permitting of course.
* Remember, if it is not advertised in the product section, it's not available.
l will let you know in FAQ, so keep an eye out. Please show the initiative to check the monthly newsletters instead of asking, thank you, Farmer Gene.
- 12
Please remember, if it isn't advertised, it's not available!!
Isn't it so dry out there, no real rain is forecast for this month, so not good start for sowing in crops.
Regular Customers - are those who have purchased small horse quality bales this season (since Nov 2024 (website started) to 2025). So, there is a red Regular Customer badge (found in your Log In account) who has automatic access to this subsection. Password has been changed, so just needing to make sure those eligible have the correct badge, if not, please send me a message in Live Chat daily 7am to 7pm so l can assign you the badge.
Matthey Farm mobile app - is now available for regular customers only and all instructions is listed in a FAQ (Under Ordering Questions, titled "Matthey Farm App (for mobiles only)". Feedback is great to use, easier than the website and the messages come through as a notification, so not looking through your spam emails for order confirmation.
Farmer Geoff's Italian Rye small squares will be sold out this month. The countdown is on the title of the product, updated with every new order. Next season for Grass hay is Dec/ Jan, weather permitting. 17/05/25 - All grass hay has been SOLD sorry.
Delicious Lucerne Hay small squares, there is about 8,000 left, but they won't last long. If you need to stock up, better do this now before it is all sold out till next season (Oct/ Nov).
17/05/25 - How exciting to see 2mm of rain this morning. Apparently, we are expected to get above average rain fall in June and July. With this drought hitting us all, producing hay was very difficult.
So for this season 24/25 - the following hasn't been made or has been sold out until new season starts around Nov for most hay;
* SOLD out of Italian Rye Grass small squares
* SOLD out of Stockfeed lucerne small squares
* No Rounds have been produced
* No Straw was baled
* SOLD out of Yummy, Luscious and Tasty Lucerne small squares
* SOLD out of Garden Lucerne Mulch
* No Scrumptious Oaten Hay small square was produced
Keep an eye on newsletters for possible Lucerne Silage, but not looking promising in this very cold winter weather at the moment.
l am still getting notifications of Scammers from Facebook using my business name and address, This is not me as l am no longer on Facebook since Nov 24 and all communication is via this website only in Live Chat.
Please do not pay unless you have done your research and at least consulted with someone else about the farmer/ page/ group.
Then if you are suspicious or get caught, please report to
- 13
Wow, doesn't time fly when you work everyday 😂
l baled up some more of the 4th cut Lucerne last night. Because of this winter weather, it's possible that the Lucerne Hay will be down-graded to Yummy Lucerne, just waiting to bale the river section which could be within the next few days. l will advertise the bales once when its baled, in packs and in the shed.
Speaking of the shed, it has been a quite season, haven't been able to produce as much hay so just the main shed has never been at it's capacity.
Saying this means that there definitely won't be Lucerne Hay available all till the new season. l give it two months worth.
With Easter around the corner, don't forget that l am closed Good Friday to Easter Sunday and re-opening Easter Monday 7am. All products, services and Live Chat will not be available during this time. Please make sure you have enough hay to last you for those 3 days of being closed.
Maybe head over to Inverleigh & Districts Good Friday Appeal Family Fun Day at Victoria Park, Inverleigh on Friday 18th April 10am to 5pm. They have a Live Auction, and you could buy 14 x Delicious Lucerne Hay bales.
11/04/25 - Mowed the rest of the 4th cut Lucerne Hay the other day, hoping it will dry out enough to start raking it so it can cure properly. The weather is looking promising over the next week, possible rain on Saturday 19th April but will definitely have it all baled by then as we have some hot days coming.
Unfortunately, the last lot of 4th cut Lucerne Hay went into silage, which has all been sold pending payment this weekend.
Black Swans are in the dam, how many can you see. Trust me when l say that you need to count two or three times as you'll get a different number each time. We have had professionals coming to cull the ducks as they cause too much damage to the Lucerne growing. Since there are less ducks now. there are more swans.
Farmer Geoff's Italian Rye Grass is almost all sold out, with only 320 bales remaining for this season. Next season starts Dec/ Jan 2026.
Have you tried downloading Matthey Farm mobile app? It's quite simple and there is instructions on how to do so in FAQ. It is an easier process to use then this website as long as you remember to complete all three steps.
There has been a few customers who Sign Up to create their account on this website and forget that they need to Log In every time they wish to communicate or to place an order. This website is safe to stay Logged In, saves working out which email you used or if it's Facebook or Google account. It is only complicated if you make it. Majority of customers find the whole process simple to use. I cannot link the products and services as one as this "Wix" program doesn't allow it sorry. So just continue to communicate, see your spam emails for replies when offline and have a look at all the help you can get from all the answers in FAQ. Farmer Gene is available at times during Live Chat from 7am to 7pm daily if you cannot find the answer in FAQ.
28/04/25 - So, l have finished baling all the lucerne hay into small squares. The yummy bales didn't last long and sold out very quickly. Now l just have the Delicious Lucerne Hay remaining until all sold. There definitely won't be enough to supply regular customers till the new season, so there will be months of no hay available till the new season starting Oct/ Nov (weather permitting). Let's hope it will be a better season then the last four.
Stockfeed Lucerne Hay small squares are all sold for this season sorry. l might be doing Lucerne Silage in May but will depend on the weather. This will be advertised in the product section with a 6 week date for pick up as it needs to ferment during this time. l will keep you up to date in the May newsletter of my progress.
Scammers are still very strong on Facebook, even creating a Matthey Farm invoice. The cheek of these idiots! This is through a page called "Good Hay For Sale Near Me", using both Matthey Farm name and address. l have recently contacted Consumer Affairs Victoria and will follow up with them again tomorrow about what else l can do as a business to stop hard working Aussies getting ripped off. Just remember to always pay cash for any new supplier, do your research on the page and try to find the genuine business owner to ask/ let them know as most of the times they will not know about it.
If you are not able to pick up, or it's not through the page/ person you are enquiring through, its usually a scam. Ask hay friends for their thoughts/ knowledge about the possible new supplier.
Thank you, Farmer 🤠Gene
- 14
Price change for all Lucerne Hay is due to the supply and demand.
There is not much hay available in our region this season unfortunately due to the severe heat we have had the last four months with very little rain breaks.
HAY in Victoria - With limited amount of hay supply in our region and my shed, all customers should source hay in bulk to store to last till the new season Nov/ Dec 2025. If you are buying from a new supplier, please use cash only to avoid being scammed. I have a local Facebook hay group to help source some hay, which will soon have Victoria wide suppliers advertised.

Regular Customers will be given the opportunity to use the new Matthey Farm app for ordering. It is a lot easier and simple to use. l will send out information to most regular customers (RC) who have the badge "Regular Customer 25". Please keep an eye in your spam/ junk email folder or scroll upwards in your messages for instructions. You can also get the instructions in FAQ under "Matthey Farm App (mobiles only)".
So, when RC orders, not only you need the password, you also need to have the RC 24 or 25 badge assigned to you.
RC's can alter your order (prior to 3 hours of collection) in 'my account". l will get the notification of change via email.
4th cut Lucerne Hay - pretty happy with getting most of the 4th cut around the main farm done. There are sections that l didn't get to process due to the lucerne plant being too old & scarce and probably won't be this season as it too dry and the water in the dam is limited for the last of the cut 4th. The shed has not been at full capacity this season, just haven't been able to produce large quantities. The lucerne hay in the shed will not be able to last till the new season Oct/ Nov 2025.
Paperwork - getting on top of all my paperwork during the really hot days. l always do this manually, no computers for me. Always plenty of odd jobs to do around the farm and maintaining machinery. Actually having a bit of time to catch up with family and friends which is always a bonus.
Italian Rye Grass Hay - Farmer Geoff's - this supply is getting low, under 600 bales remaining. This definitely won't last till the new season Dec/Jan 2025.
SCAMMERS - they appear to be still quite active on Facebook, using the Matthey Farm business name and address. If you are using a new supplier, insist that you will only be paying cash on both pick up and delivery as all Australian Farmers will accept cash.
Do your homework prior to purchasing, take your time to look at the page, ask your friends about the supplier, does the information look genuine?
If you have been scammed or if you believe that you could be, please report the page/ person to Consumer Affairs, Facebook, the Police and your Bank.

The more reports are given, the more chances of action being taken.
Stockfeed Lucerne Hay small squares is getting low in supply and not sure if l am able to make any more. My priority is always making high quality lucerne, but as always, it just depends on the weather that depends on what is made.
13/03/25 - how lucky are we, got 2mm of rain late evening yesterday. So excited that it can still rain out our way. Still spending heaps of time irrigating and making sure the weeds are out of the sprinkler's way.
Have you noticed there is Black Swans in the dam? I have seen up to four at once. They are the bigger birds amongst the ducks and cootes.
24/03/25 - Another day of mowing sections of 4th cut Lucerne Hay, started yesterday. There won't be much of the remaining 4th cut due to the limited supply of water/ rain. Although we did get 19mm rain last week and was very happy to see. It helped everything grow and looking much better.
The shed is looking a bit empty, hoping to put some more much needed horse quality lucerne hay in there but l may run out in a few months. Definitely won't have a supply of hay lasting till next season, October/ November 2025/
Thank you, Farmer 🤠 Gene
- 15
Wow, that was some busy times! Almost all the 3rd cut Lucerne Hay has been baled and lucky l waited for the last heatwave to pass before mowing, otherwise it would of copped 38mm of rain received.
Picture is of the big whirlly whirlly prior to the rain coming. Loads of thunder and the lightening show was very impressive, What ruined everything was the wind late afternoon and throughout the night. Very happy to get all that rain as it saves me using the last of the water in the dam for the up coming 4th cut.
So 1st cut Lucerne Hay is all sold, 2nd cut was average, 3rd cut was pretty good and 4th cut in the very near future to process and will be a smaller quantity due to limited water supply for irrigation.
As of today, 05/02, Farmer Geoff only has 923 bales of his Italian Rye remaining, which is all for this season. Won't last till the new season in Nov/ Dec 2025.
HAY FOR SALE product in black is what Matthey Farm currently has available and is always up to date. At the moment there is only three products available for regular customers, including stockfeed which is atm $17 Yummy Lucerne.
Unless l can produce a lower grade of Lucerne Hay (caused by the weather) in the next few cuts, this could be the remaining of variety of hay available till the new season starting Oct/ Nov 2025.
SOLD - all Silage, Stockfeed, Mulch, Phalaris Grass and wasn't able to make any straw bales this season (crop died).
At this date, l still have NOT produced any Rounds of Lucerne Hay.
Farmer Geoff definitely does NOT have any Rounds of Grass.
Silage, Stockfeed and Mulch might still be made during this season, depending on the weather conditions when the hay is due to be bailed.
Sign Up and LOG IN difference - When you first open your account with Matthey Farm, you are signing up. When you are returning to the Matthey Farm website, you need to always LOG IN to order and chat.
Last of the 3rd cut Lucerne Hay will be mowed tomorrow, 06/02/25.
13/02/25 - 3rd cut Silage Lucerne Hay, the last of the hay sections was baled early hours this morning into Silage. This was due to rain being predicted to arrive today in the evening and the hay wasn't cured enough to make small bales or rounds. There is only 24 silages available and can be picked up from 27/03/25 (as the silage needs to ferment a minimum of 6 weeks prior to using).
You can order and pay for it now to reserve your silage.
Volunteer needed to assist with finalising mobile app, must be a Regular Customer please with some spare time and to give me honest feedback.
Send me a message on Live Chat.
Mobile App will help with streamline ordering and get notifications for messages in Live Chat.
Would you like to test drive it?
20/02/25 - Well, l wont be mowing along our road again. A rock came from the mower and smashed my back window of the tractor. Frightening me.
l hope l can get a window tomorrow as l am using the tractor often atm.
21/02/25 - Had to drive to Sunshine to get the window and thanks to Matt from Ballarat John Deere dropping off the rubber seal.
28/02/25 - 4th cut Lucerne Hay is well under way with cured Lucerne possibly being baled at some stage tonight. l will not be able to bale it all tonight but hoping to make a start if the weather conditions are ideal.
Just wondering if anyone is receiving an SMS from me to remind you of your order to pick up in 24 hours? It would be great if this system is actually working.
Italian Rye grass is getting low. As of this moment, 710 bales remain till the new season in Dec/ Jan.

Happy New Years to all and hope you are keeping well and full from Christmas lunch/ dinner.
Christmas/ New Year Closed: Farmer Gene would like to thank those who helped during his Mental Health days off (Xmas to New Year) by allowing him to have that much needed break from his mobile especially. It was nice to have all the notifications off and not having it by his side at all times. Unfortunately, you always get a special few who made his anxiety worse by booking orders using the only product advertised (stating the farm was closed) and even showing up to the farm.
Just a tad disappointed that we still have customers who cannot read.
Next Mental Health break is Good Friday to Easter Sunday.
This WEBSITE has been going for nearly two months now and it appears to be going well from this end. How is it at your end?
There are some customers who need to start looking at their emails or Live Chat as there is a lot of missed communication still. See FAQ for assistance.

All the 2ND CUT LUCERNE HAY has been baled and stacked into the shed. Most of this got caught out in the heat, so some is quite sunbleached.
Actually, the 1st cut is better quality overall.
Farmer Gene has been busy during his Mental Health time out. Not only did he make time to catch up with family, he finished all the 2nd cut Lucerne Hay and packed the remaining bales of grass and straw for Farmer Geoff.
RAINFALL on Monday was very much needed as the dam is getting low. Got 19mm altogether. The Lucerne is looking great out in the paddocks. But now Farmer Gene is tossing up if to mow now (starting Tuesday) or not. The decision all depends on the up coming weather. Yes the sun is out again, but possible rain on both Sunday 12th and Tuesday 14th. What to do?
There is still not enough Lucerne Hay in the shed to offer delivers yet. Not sure if this will change. Just depends on which quality lucerne that can be produced when all the 3rd cut lucerne is baled.
To mow or not to mow, that is the question. Stay tuned .........
STOCKFEED subsection has been created to provide to those who have purchased the Stockfeed Lucerne bales this season, the opportunity to continue buying lucerne hay (Tasty Lucerne Hay only) for their cattle, sheep, goats and alpacas.
21/01/25 - 3rd cut Lucerne Hay is underway now. It has been cut and raked a few times, could possibly start baling tonight if the weather and the lucerne moisture content is good.
There are still new customers coming through and not reading the generic information that is given to them. Please take the time to show initiative and take the time to read and complete your order correctly the first and every time. And do NOT assume your order has gone through and just turn up at the farm. Please seek the two lots of confirmation.
SCAMMERS - they appear to be still quite active on Facebook, using the Matthey Farm business name and address. If you are using a new supplier, insist that you will only be paying cash on both pick up and delivery as all Australian Farmers will accept cash.

The more reports are given, the more chances of action being taken.
FYI - Matthey Farm will NOT have any grass rounds for sale this season. The only hay that is available is always advertised on the HAY FOR SALE product in any of the SHOP subsections.
25/01/25 - 3rd cut most of this is now in the shed in packs. It looks great and Delicious!! Pictures never look as good as real life,
l never alter any of the pictures.
So now l am now mowing the rest of the 3rd cut Lucerne Hay around the farm.
The dam is looking very low now and the weather is very dry. Hoping to get to mow some 4th cut in a month and that might be it for this season. Farmer Geoff's grass is down to 936 bales (won't last long) and Farmer Gene's Phalaris grass is only TWO bales left. So the weather says 40 degrees on Monday 😲
The shed is looking a bit better now since most of the 3rd cut is in there. It still wont be enough hay to last till the end of this season so make sure you have a back up plan of sourcing/ storing hay to last till Nov/Dec.

🛑 Please be aware the Matthey Farm will be closed Tuesday 25th December 2024 from 3pm and reopens on Thursday 2nd January 2025 at 7am.
Wow, doesn't time fly when you have fun! Santa will be here is no time 😆
Farmer Gene always has this week off (usually working anyway, but he has the opportunity to catch up with family from around our land of oz when they visit)
Farmer Gene is hoping to start the 2nd cut Lucerne Hay soon (when it stops raining, but definitely not complaining at the moment). The rain is saving the water l have reserved in the dam.
Consumers, please show initiative and take your time to have a look around in this website, know your features and things to help you. Behind the scenes when there's time, is always consistently updating something in here to help make the whole process user friendly. You may notice "word" changes. If you have any positive or negative feedback about something, please let Farmer Gene know via Live Chat. Have a look around in FAQ, there are a lot of questions which get asked regularly. When Farmer Gene starts get super busy again soon, he will only be directing you to FAQ instead of answering as he needs to focus on what he is doing (usually using machinery).
Visitors - please do NOT send any messages unless you Login first as there is no point Farmer Gene responding to your query if you are offline as messages do not go to your email address.
Visitors can look, not touch (so to speak).
l sound like a broken record, but please take the time to follow the 3 Steps in the subsection "ANYONE can purchase" and wait for the confirmation of your completed order by Farmer Gene to know that it has been received.
Incomplete orders are cancelled, and no order is taken via Live Chat or email.
And remember, the only hay/ straw that is available is only what is advertised.
There are no hidden doors or special customers. What you currently see is it.
When a new product is created, it will then be advertised for sale.
You will be updated in this newsletter of the progress of 2nd cut Lucerne Hay, what will Farmer Gene produce? 😄
So far, the last couple of days the 2nd cut Lucerne has been mowed, still more to go at some stage. Lots of watering uncut Lucerne as its going to be toasty warm weather.
Great effort to those who are actually taking their time to complete their first order successfully. It will get easier, like riding a bike.
Please let Farmer Gene know if there are any concerns, so he can help out if you cannot find it in FAQ.
Picture of some of the 2nd cut Lucerne Hay baled and still heaps out curing. None is in the shed just yet. Will be bailing more tonight (15th Dec)
So l will start to pack when its all baled so we don't spoil the cured hay being out in the heat for too long. Will advise quality (name of hay) once when its packed and safe n sound in the shed. Busy Busy!!
16th Well, not very successful last night as the dew came in at 12:30pm, so Farmer Gene had to stop baling. Waiting for the wind to pick up in early hours, but it didn't arrive. Got to bale a few more mid-morning but soon had to give up due to the heat. Had a much-needed afternoon nap and plan to pack all the bales that are out there. The only positive today was this rainbow this morning at 6am. Gotta love mother nature.
Very exciting news, our Shire has done the road, so no corrugated bumps to drive on for a while.
So most of the 2nd cut Lucerne Hay has been irrigated, mower conditioned, raked, cured, baled, packed and is now in the shed. To be honest, the 1st cut is actually better quality this year as the 2nd cut is very sun-bleached.
Picture of Farmer Gene hard at it during the wee hours of the morning. He hardly stops this fella. There are three more big sections of 2nd cut Lucerne to go. It's not looking promising as the heatwave is back again around Christmas. Oh well, sun-bleached hay does not lose its nutritional value, it's just appearance.

Hi there and Welcome to the new Matthey Farm Website (09/11/24) where all things are weird and new.
l will be creating a monthly Newsletter here until l can find a spot on this website. We both may have so much to learn about modern technology.
*** Always check your spam/ junk folder in your emails as there might be correspondence from Farmer Gene if you are offline on this website ***
Thursday 21st Nov we are having a Student Tour - 17 students from Bannockburn P-12 College 11:20am to 2pm. They will be learning about life on the land, having lunch and a farm tour all around, learning about Agriculture. Edited: it was a great success and idea to educate our next generation.
So, this month is the start of the 1st cut Lucerne Hay and also the Phalaris/ Rye grass (very small section around the weir) on the Matthey Farm. It's been an interesting start to the hay season with sporadic weather conditions, going from one extreme to the next.
Farmer Gene is regularly updating the FAQ section with additional information in some questions and creating more questions which has been asked. This process will take some time, please be patient and together we will create a streamline site.
Also behind the scenes of a website (its dark and daunting) but will do the best to make it easier to use.
** To order any products from Matthey Farm, you must become a "Site Member." You will be approved and will need to confirm your email address to avoid those who lurk in the background to scam you out of your had working money, yes, those scammers. You only need to do this once, its permanent and any orders received from anyone who is not a Site Member, it will be cancelled. Since being a new site member, please send me a message via Live Chat which hay/ straw you intend to purchase and if you are a regular customer (HQ since Jan24). Always make sure that your put your first and last name so Farmer Gene knows who you are. You would be surprised how many customers there is with the same first name.
Login or stay logged in at the Matthey Farm so if you need to use Live Chat to Farmer Gene, he may respond while your offline and so the message goes to your email address.
If you are having trouble with the Step by Step instructions to order on the Products and Service section, then l have a picture version here in FAQ. Just have a look in the "Ordering Questions" section of FAQ or just search the word "picture".
Looks like there will be some of Farmer Geoff's grass coming to the Matthey Farm to sell, but it won't be as much as last year, very limited. Keep an eye in products for when they are ready to be sold. The grass hay will be advertised in Products & Service section in the last week of November.
It might be a hard season for silage as it appears to be too dry so far. Please consider stockfeed lucerne hay which anyone can purchase.
23/11 - What a busy night for all the Farmers👨🏻🌾 Gene, Geoff & Steve. With about two hours sleep yesterday afternoon, it's been another long night, a race against the weather to get all the Lucerne and Grass Hay baled, packed and stacked into the shed. We can tick off Lucerne Hay and Geoff's Grass Hay has been done (over 6k bales in total), just need to do the Grass Hay (Phalaris & Rye) small patch baled, packed and stacked before the rain is due this afternoon. Then a much-needed rest for all three.
Please be aware the Matthey Farm will be closed Tuesday 25th December 2024 from 3pm and reopens on Thursday 2nd January 2025 at 7am.
During this time, Farmer Gene will not be available via Live Chat and there will be no products advertised during this time.
Please make sure that you purchase the hay you need while its closed.
You must complete Step 2 & 3 simultaneously to avoid your order being cancelled after half hour of making it if no communication has been made via Live Chat (in your email if offline).
24/11/24 - Grass Hay is finally advertised for Regular Customers only sorry (please see FAQ for Regular Customer definition) - all stored in the shed prior to the rains arriving. The price is reflected on the quantity and quality of the hay. Also, the supply and demand is important to include as there is only 1,200 bales of Italian Rye and only 200 bales of the Phalaris & Rye grass. Once when all this grass is sold, that is it for this season till Nov/ Dec 2025.
Limits may apply and there is never delivery offered for any grass hay.
It was a big few weeks and Farmer Gene finally caught up on his sleep yesterday afternoon. Sleeping for 8 hours straight, awake for 2 hours and back to sleep for another 8 hours. Working 22 hours a day for most days does takes it's toll and none of us are getting any younger 🤣
27/11/24 - to avoid further confusion to some existing customers, the ordering process (step 2) has changed slightly. There is now two subsections to the SHOP tab at the main menu. l am hoping this is the solution and encourages those to reach out via Live Chat for communication to new visitors which hay they are eligible to purchase.
Please continue to give feedback via 'Live Chat" and keep an eye on your emails, especially in your spam/ junk folder as there might be something from the Matthey Farm.
Don't forget Matthey Farm closes for a week around Christmas to New Year, so please purchase what you need for now. No stocking up yet, the shed isn't even half full and will start 2nd Lucerne Hay in a few weeks. I am guessing that you will be able to stock up in the New Year.
It will be advertised in FAQ when.
- 19
Live Chat is the only way of communicating to Farmer Gene daily from 7am to 7pm.
This is located on this website, the almost green round on the right bottom of your page. If there is a message in here, there will be a red number on the icon.
Visitors - l am unable to reply, so please look for your answer using key words to search for in FAQ. There is plenty of answers to choose from.
Log In Site Members - You can view while online or replied responses is sent to your email when you are offline. (check your spam/ junk email folder) and you can click "Reply Now" in the email to save you logging onto the website.
Live Chat is the similar to Facebook messenger that all your previous conversations is just a matter of scrolling upwards for all Site Members.
When Farmer Gene replies to your query or confirms your order and you are offline, then this will be sent to your email address (often hiding in your spam/junk folder)
Matthey Farm mobile app which is available for Regular Horse Customers with a badge called "Mobile App", is a much easier way for chatting as you get the notification of replied response immediately, just like messenger. Also from feedback, it is much easier for ordering too. See FAQ for instructions titled "Matthey Farm mobile app".
- 20
Please note there are numerous monitor security cameras which record around on the Matthey Farm so don't go snooping around looking at things outside of your picking up hay timeslot.
Please respect Farmer Gene's property.
All you need is right at the mailbox, envelopes, hand sanitiser, a cold-water running tap, a fire extinguisher and a small first aid kit with basic essentials.
The house on the property is out of bounds, renters do NOT have anything to do with the farm.
- 21
Being a farm, there are often snakes around, mostly in the Spring and Summer time.
If you do see one, stay still first to decide on your options for safety.
Are you able to get into your car or walk outside the shed in the open area away from the snake?
Most snakes are generally as scared of you, then you are of them.
Tiger snakes are a different story.
They can be aggressive if they feel threatened.
There is a basic First Aid kit near the mailbox if required. Please only use what you need and let me know so l can top it up so there is plenty of items supplied for others.
Make some noise and they will slither away.
If you need to, make arrangements for another day/ time for pick up?
Please let me know when you are in a safe environment that you seen a snake, just so Farmer Gene can be mindful when distributing orders out in the shed and alert customers.
There's not much you can do when you see a snake other than keeping your distance. They live here too, and we all try to get along 👀😳

Most customers have spoken and have met our famous Farmer Gene.
He is the main man at the Matthey Farm, dedicating his day, every day to the farm to produce the highest quality of Oaten & Lucerne hay for all your furbabies.
Farmer Gene is an amazing farmer, very loyal and tries to do his best all the time.
Customers (your furbabies) satisfaction is his up most importance and tries to get it all perfect for you, every day, all day - 24/7.
He doesn't go on holidays, he doesn't get to spend a lot of time with family and he does all the paperwork for the farm and other family businesses the old fashion way, the paper trail.
Creating this website is to reduce his load of communication (sorry) as its too much to try and multitask often with mobile and machinery (when he has reception). The joy for him to often repeating himself in answering messages is getting to be too much. And with Facebook deleting the main functions that was ideal for this farm and all those scammers took its toll.
One day you may meet him at the shed when you're picking up hay and he will give you the time for a chat and help you load. Or he could be floating around at the other farm paddock down the road, or in one of Farmer Geoff's paddocks out in the community helping him with raking, baling or packing hay for him.
Thank you, Farmer Gene, for your amazing dedication for providing hay, a streamline service for ordering & picking it up and for the countless hours you spend to make it all happen.
There would be no Matthey Farm if it wasn't for our fabulous ...... Farmer Gene
- 23
Farmer Steve is the brother of Farmer Gene and helps out regularly during the hay season (Oct-April).
Farmer Steve is the main man who you see for Assisted Loading most mornings 7am to 9am.
While Farmer Steve is very reliable and consistent, without his valuable assistance on the farm, there would be less hay produced and a longer duration of time to process all the hay.
Farmer Steve is an asset to the Matthey Farm, thank you for all you do.
- 24
Farmer Geoff is a lovely neighbour from the Matthey Farm area.
Farmer Geoff is always a busy vegemite with his own cereal crops, lucerne, hay, dun peas (pea straw from this) and faba beans. He also does a lot of share farming within our community. He has taught Farmer Gene everything he needs to know about producing quality hay and is a great mate to chat to on dreary days that can ruin hay/ crops. When it's GO time at the Matthey Farm (the rains are coming and hay needs to be baled and into the shed pronto), Farmer Geoff comes to the Matthey Farm, helping out with his tractor and baler any time of the day or night.
Matthey Farm is very grateful for his wealth of knowledge, friendship and just an amazing person. In return, Matthey Farm helps sell some of his straw, Wimmera Rye Grass, Italian Rye Grass & Vetch Hay for Farmer Geoff, when it is in season.
Updated for season 25/26 - l will not be selling any grass or straw from Farmer Geoff this season as it has been very difficult for him to produce horse quality hay.
Thank you, Farmer Geoff, for all you do.
- 25
All New Customers must first become a "Site Member" prior to ordering and establish with Farmer Gene via "Live Chat" which hay you are eligible to purchase prior to any orders being made please.
Orders, deliveries & pickup available 7 days per week from 7am - 7pm
Deliveries are usually done when Farmer Gene gets a break in the hay traffic, around mid morning time. Please see the Delivery information in FAQ.
Days the Matthey Farm is closed every year:
- Good Friday to Easter Sunday
- Christmas/New Year period from 3pm 24th December and reopening 7am on 2nd January
- If we ever get flooded out again - road is not accessible.
- Also the farm is closed when all the hay for the season has been sold.
- 26
Farmer Gene appreciates and welcomes any and all feedback as he is constantly striving to provide the best products and services that he can!
To leave your feedback please contact Farmer Gene via Live Chat.
If you have a positive Feeback to share with the public, please do this on the Matthey Farm Facebook page - www.facebook.com/MattheyFarm
- 27
Farmer Gene does not have a contact number due to the poor mobile reception in most parts of the farm. Taking orders in the one place (this website) is much easier then using a variety of apps. Often he does forget things, especially during his busy 20 hour days, so if its all in one place, you wont be forgotten.
Coverage at Matthey Farm can be sporadic at best, even with primary carriers such as Telstra.
Since there is no more 3G, so
5G often works well (depends on the weather and where you are on the farm).
4G is very poor in most areas of the farm.
- 28
No animals are permitted at Matthey Farm sorry due to possible contamination of the hay.
Farmer Gene strives to provide the highest quality hay possible to his customers, so all preventative measures are taken including the prevention of contamination by any and all external animals.
- 29
You must be Logged In to use Live Chat as when you receive a reply and you are offline, it will go to your email (can be in spam/ junk folder).
Please only use Live Chat if you cannot find the answer to your query in the Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ). Exceptions are Delivery and Feedback.
Farmer Gene is a very busy Vegemite all day, every day on the farm.
Live Chat is open 7am to 7pm daily - from 7pm to 7am, he will be offline, but you can still send messages. Only offline on the days the farm is closed (Good Friday to Easter & Xmas to New Year).
*** Always check your spam/ junk folder in your emails as there might be correspondence from Farmer Gene if you are offline on this website ***

You will find it at the very start, above the first question, the magnifying glass.
Just type in a word or two, it isn't a very good search engine.
Or just scroll through the Questions to find what you are looking for.
Inside most FAQs, it will have some key words bolded so you can search through to find what you would like to know, especially in monthly newsletters keeping you up to date with what's happening at the farm.
Also the FAQ has been split up into three different Categories;
General
All about Hay
Ordering Questions

Truthfully, these sites control the user by making impacting changes when they want and not helping much with the little fish in the world wide web, like me.
Facebook only wanted $60 per month to become a genuine page, no thank you.
Also, the need to prevent scammers as there are heaps on Facebook and they weren't deleting any of these pages.
These scammers were using my name (Matthey Farm) and address to sell their fake hay. Since when do farmers use a third party to sell their hay?
I have been contacted and even a visited (lost $3k) from those who had been scammed or from those who (thankfully) did some research first before paying via EFT. Recently a fundraiser lost nearly $10k. Please see "Scammers" in FAQ for more details on how to avoid them and what to do if become a victim.
Consumer Affairs are involved as well as the police and banks.
Since l only collect cash, hopefully the scammers will stop using Matthey Farm customers. Even running a competition was very challenging because of scammers stealing the Matthey Farm identity and getting my customers to join and then try to scam them out of money via messenger.
Google Maps and Maps is gone too, to prevent scammers using Matthey Farm name and address and to prevent the odd person just rocking up to the farm without an appointment. Funny as l don't see it as a shop, more like a farm.
I have almost gotten rid of all web search of the Matthey Farm, any other website advertising my farm - this is all false and l haven't consented to them using old and false information.
So, all correspondence and orders will happen right here in my own safe website which l can control for a fraction of the cost of Facebook (Meta & AI).
- 33
Matthey Farm is a farm, not a shop that is open to the public.
Three main reasons for this, firstly l am not wanting anyone to arrive at the Matthey Farm asking for hay and showing them different types of hay when they have no appointment. l am not always at the main farm to assist people this way and l honestly don't have the time. The address has been removed too, and l have almost finished consulting these rouge websites to delete all information regarding Matthey Farm as its mostly all false, old, misleading information and another source for scammers to use.
Another reason is to prevent scammers using my business name and address to sell their fake hay & wood to hard working people being scammed out of their money. It's outrageous and l have had enough. l just wish that social media police work faster to apprehend these bad people. This is why l am no longer on Facebook, Instagram and Gumtree.
Social Media is getting worse and too many venerable people don't do the research.
l would like to keep my reputation intact please.
The maps show a different location of this Matthey Farm as to through off the scammers to the location. Always read the written instructions to location of the farm from your confirmed order email.
Until there is a huge supply of hay again in our region, most of the hay l sell is for regular customers only and l don't like saying to individuals that they are not eligible to purchase any horse quality small square hay bales. It's heartbreaking. If only l had a bigger farm and heaps of hay to supply everyone, but that is not the case. It's mostly just me, Farmer Gene here all day every day.
- 34
All New Customers must first become a "Site Member" prior to ordering and establish with Farmer Gene via "Live Chat" which hay you are eligible to purchase prior to any orders being made please.
A very good question: it is important to always Login when you are online here and stay Logged In, so Farmer Gene knows who he is talking to and when talking on Live Chat with one of us offline, it will send the message via email (check spam folder).
Also, it streamlines the process of your all orders.
With your details, please make sure that you put both your First & Last Name so Farmer Gene knows whether you are a regular horse customer or not and you will be surprised how many Adele's, Andrea's, etc l have as customers.
The Address is for your Billing/ Delivery details which is sent to you via 2 x confirmation emails after you have completed your order (Steps 1, 2 ,3 & 4).
Your mobile number is used to send you a remind sms of your order in 24 hours' time and so l can send a sms to all customers an important group message if required.
All your details is not used by Matthey Farm or any other third party.
This website is quite secure, and mostly because there is no card details as it's always cash payment.
*** Always check your spam/ junk folder in your emails as there might be correspondence from Farmer Gene if you are offline on this website ***

1. To find out who this new site member is and which hay/ animals they have so l can assist better with ordering, to avoid confusion of a regular customer and what is an incomplete order. Also to avoid duplicate accounts.
Basically, streamlining the whole initial process for all future orders.
2. Just having an email address without the first and last name will be given a certain time before it is deleted. Messages are sent prior with an expiry date.
I like to know all who are members and maintain a genuine website.
3. To avoid Bots & Spam, confirming you are human. Bots and spammers can flood this site with spam emails, irrelevant forum posts, and fake members. These actions can damage the Matthey Farm reputation and make it harder for Farmer Gene to manage this site. So there are heaps of precautions to prevent this from ever happening, behind the scenes. If you ever suspect anything, please let Farmer Gene know via Live Chat, thank you.
4. And the same named customer. Did you know that l currently have 5 Megan's on this website? 15/12/24
So for the ordering purpose, last name on your membership is definitely needed.

*Matthey Farm is strictly by confirmed appointment only for all entry*
Matthey Farm is located in the outskirts of Bannockburn, Victoria, Australia. Matthey Farm is not a shop, it is a farm that is usually managed by one person with different paddocks all over, so not always available for show ups.
You will receive the address and directions after you have completed Step 1, Step 2, Step 3 and Step 4 when you first order.
Both Google Maps and Maps of the Matthey Farm has been deleted because of the numerous scammers selling fake hay and wood using the Matthey Farm name and address. Please see "Scammers" in FAQ if you need more information.
Matthey Farm is closed Christmas to New Year and Good Friday to Easter Sunday - this will be advertised in the products section.
During this period that is for Farmer Gene's Mental Health, just time out from customers and his mobile. Please respect his time out, there will be no products advertised, unable to make any appointments and he will not be available for Live Chat during this time. All notifications will be switched off so Farmer Gene can have a break from his consistently flashing mobile.
Also closed when all the hay has been sold during the off season.
