WELCOME TO MATTHEY FARM
Family-Owned and Operated Farm Since 2013
Premium Lucerne Hay
Here at Matthey Farm our very own Farmer Gene is extremely passionate about bringing you the highest quality Lucerne Hay, grown and harvested with care, dedication, and a deep respect for nature.
The farm consists of nine Lucerne paddocks, five of these paddocks are irrigated, supporting growth even in drier conditions, while the remaining paddocks rely on rainfall. When nature cooperates, the Lucerne plant can thrive for up to ten years.
Lucerne Hay Process
Once it’s ready, Farmer Gene sets about mowing the Lucerne, he then carefully rakes the hay during the cool evenings to ensure a thorough curing process.
When the conditions are just right, baling takes place (often at night) to capture the perfect moisture levels. This process can take a week or more, depending on the weather, but it ensures that every bale created meets his standards of quality.
Each bale is then packed and stored in the shed until it reaches you. Lucerne’s journey doesn’t end with just one harvest. When the plant regrows, it’s mowed, raked, and baled once again, producing a “second cut” and so on.
Pricing
These cuts can vary in price, as they come from a variety of paddocks and baled at different days, therefore they can differ slightly in quality depending on weather conditions at the time of curing and baling.
Prices are determined by the quality and availability of Lucerne Hay, much like seasonal fruit and vegetables.
When you buy Lucerne Hay directly from the Matthey Farm, you’re not just getting a product; you’re supporting a local family who dedicates their lives to the land. Farming is a commitment, with many hours of voluntary work, and an ever-present reliance on the right weather conditions to bring in a good crop.
Without rain, there’s no harvest, and without farmers, there’s no hay for your special furbabies!
On behalf of the thousands of farming families in Australia I want to say a heartfelt thank you for supporting local. Your choice matters, and we’re grateful to you for buying directly from the people who work every day to provide for their community.
All the best, Cheers, Farmer Gene
